Wrist pain is a very common complaint.

While wrist pain can have many causes – impact, sprains, fractures or arthritis being obvious examples – the vast majority of modern wrist pain has one general cause: the constant use of the computer keyboard and mouse. Usually referred to as repetitive stress injuries – or, often, carpal tunnel syndrome – these causes of wrist pain are difficult to avoid for many workers in the 21st Century.

Carpal tunnel syndrome and repetitive stress wrist injuries are conditions that result from injury to the nerves in the wrist joint due to repeated movements and impacts. In carpal tunnel syndrome nerves are

compressed – pinched – as they pass through the wrist, resulting in chronic pain and / or numbness.

Severe wrist pain can make even the simplest activities – holding a glass or writing with a pen – difficult, painful and sometimes simply impossible.

Conventional medical treatments for wrist pain include: Rest and Activity Modification (hard to do if you want to keep your job or use computers); Ice and Heat Treatments (always possible but often largely ineffective); Wrist Support / Braces (they can make computer use awkward, difficult or effectively impossible) and Anti-inflammatory or Cortisone Injections (invasive, in that these drugs have systemic effects on the whole body).
